Thank you for taking the time to visit our school. It meant a lot to everyone at our school and community, but most of all to our DVE-News/TV reporters. Your visit was awesome and special! Our student reporters loved meeting and talking with you and visiting over lunch. It was wonderful, too, that you took time to sign the books our students had purchased. They talked about meeting a ‘real author’ all day long and we know meeting you is something they will always remember. Thanks, too, for the special live interview on DVE-TV. The patient and encouraging way in which you spoke with and interacted with our reporters says a lot about you. You not only made time for our young reporters, but also helped them feel relaxed and special. Your kindnesses meant so much to them and to all of us. Sharon Siegel, Carol Navitsky, and Teri Banach --DVE-News/TV Coaches Sonya K. Cole, Principa Delaware Valley E.S. Milford, PA We are always thrilled when Clara Gillow Clark visits our school. Clara engages the children, explaining how she researches her historical novels, demonstrates the writing process and sparks the creative energies in our students. She loves her craft and imparts that enthusiasm to her audiences. Her writing workshop was wonderful and our students were so excited to be collaborating with a “real author”. We are eagerly awaiting her sequel to Hill Hawk Hattie and a return visit from this talented author. —Kay Parisi-Hampel, Downsville Library Dear Clara: Thank you again for being part of our youth services district-wide workshop . Your segment of the program scored off the charts on the evaluations . You are a talented writer (and moving speaker) and an inspiration to all in your field.” —Mary Yeager, NEPA District Librarian “The children loved the stories of Clara’s childhood which she uses when writing her books. She encourages them to use their own personal knowledge in their stories. Clara's immediate connection with the students was apparent from the very beginning of her program. After the conference, I received a request from a parent for information about Clara’s books—her son wants all the titles that she has written! Clara loves what she does and it shows. She became an instant friend when we met. She is a very talented lady! —Judy Wampler, Young Authors Conference in Joplin, MO. " Clara Gillow Clark is one of my newest favorite authors. I love her books: the "goodness", the values that they subtly teach, the strong heroine characters, and the adventures. They have a "feel-good, Little House on the Prarie" quality that we so need in today's world. Clara visited our school as part of an Author's Fest. Parents, teachers, and students said they enjoyed the professional yet welcoming congeniality in her book talk . She read passages from her books then showed us the actual transcripts from her writing process-- such an encouragement to students with their own writing. Clara is an author I recommend to elementary schools. We hope to have her back again someday!." --Judy Salisbury, Librarian, East Helena Schools, Montana |

| AUTHOR VISITS WHAT I DO BOOK TALKS incorporate the research and writing process from idea to printed page. Includes audience participation. I inspire kids to achieve their personal potential by sharing stories of my school days and how teachers made the difference for me. 45 min - 1 hr. Grades 3 to 6 preferred. Maximum of three (3) presentations per school day. Be sure to schedule a short time between sessions for the author to take a break. I prefer smaller groups from a classroom of 20+ to a grade size of about 200 kids at a time for book talks. Of course, I do speak to larger groups. For larger groups or larger areas like a cafeteria or auditorium, I will need a microphone. I also request a table for presentation materials. |
| I recommend that students read at least one of my books before my visit. I don't require it, but I know from experience that the students who get the most from the visit are the ones who know who I am. You can order books directly from Candlewick for a 40% discount on Hill Hawk Hattie and Hattie on Her Way. Candlewick pays for postage and handling (see attached form). Boyds Mills Press offers a 20% discount for author visits (570) 253-1164. I live in the Northeast corner of Pennsylvania, so I'm within driving distance of most areas in New York State, Northern and Central New Jersey, and Eastern and Central Pennsylvania. If your school is more than two hours away, I will need overnight accommodations, transportation between hotel and school. |
| My fee for the 2007-2008 school year is $1250 plus travel expenses for a day long school visit. Payment is due the day of the visit, unless prior arrange-ments have been made. For schools booking an October or November event, I offer a 10% discount on my speaking fee. If you wish to book a single presentation, my fee is $500 plus expenses. If you get additional bookings for me at other schools in your area, I offer a 10% discount. |
| TIPS FOR A GREAT AUTHOR VISIT The more familiar the kids are with my work, the more involved and excited they are to meet me. It's especially great for the kids to be involved in a project that involves one of my books. Hill Hawk Hattie, for example, deals with the bygone rafting industry on the Delaware River in the 1800's. Some of the schools I have been to have put on short plays, written and illustrated journals, built rafts, drawn posters, written chapter summaries, created board games using the map of the river and Hattie's journey. + Let everyone involved know I'm coming. + Save a spot for me in the parking lot. + Provide a bottle of water for the presentation. + Check to make sure the microphone is working properly before I need it. *I don't mind eating a cafeteria lunch with students or teachers. *I am happy to sign books for kids and teachers wherever and whenever. I am happy to stay after school to autograph if extra time is required. I always enjoy spending a day with kids.
